Spent a long time at the La Jolla Historical Society today. I made an appointment and a nice woman gave me a giant box full of treasures for me to look through! And I found so many cool things!
The coolest was this mimeographed memoir written by a guy who lived in a cave he built himself and I haven’t read it all yet but I can’t wait to read it. It seems insane and involves astral projection and a guy with no arms. They filled his beautiful cave full of cement in the ‘90s because politicians were claiming it was a den of drugs and crime.
This is what I love about old California stuff: 1) the “old” stuff was at most only 100 years ago, and 2) Californians of previous generations were insane. Can’t believe I’ve never heard of this cave dweller before.
This Torrey pine is called “the sentinel” and this photo is from the ‘20s.
Look at this horizontal tree!
There was an entire special edition of a newspaper about the reserve and why we should save it and I love the 70s era images (these are all bad scans and then screencapped which is why they look janky fyi fyi).
but I really loved the ads in the newspaper that were like “buy our shit and oh yeah we love the trees,” like the ‘70s version of a brand having a rainbow icon during pride month.

Also tonight my friend Sunny and I went to see Ana Carrete and Adam Gnade read, and I had the loveliest time. Adam and Ana and the people who Adam is touring with reminded me that not everybody is a commodity, some people just make cool things because they want to make cool things.
Lora and Matty’s performance was also great, felt entranced by Lora.
Ana is the real deal and i fucking love her and her poems.
yes yes very good day
That sounds like a great day! The zero caption pic is scary. When Blake and I stayed at a cabin in upstate ny it was on the trail of a man who lived in caves and walked the same trail over and over that was like a billion miles long. I will try to look up/remember the name. I love Ana and Adam too and would like to go to that reading if they were in town!
