a weird genre of music is the “i got so many ladies and here are their names/places they are from”
we got “california girls” (beach boys), “the wanderer” (dion), “travelin’ man” (ricky nelson), “mambo no. 5” (lou bega), “area codes” (ludacris)…
basically advertisements for “I have VD”
i guess they fit into the larger genre of “list songs” (e.g. “surfin’ USA” and “we didn’t start the fire”)
i have had sleeping problems since i was a wee child and when i was younger, i would listen to the oldies channel to fall asleep.
when i heard “the wanderer,” i would get, unbidden, the following image in my mind: a giant blob thing wearing sunglasses walking down a ‘50s-era street, and his blob arms would wrap ladies and then he would gently chuck them aside and grab another lady, with each giant blob step. sometimes he was in a convertible.
the blob sort of resembled the starfish from Spongebob Squarepants and also the Kool Aid man.
Seems weird there was a commercial series that involved a giant pitcher destroying your house? and nobody thought it was weird?
also sometimes as i was falling asleep, i would see flashing images of childhood things, that usually involved duplos, those wooden alphabet blocks that are painted, and the owl from mister roger’s.
now i frequently see flashing images of strangers’ faces.
I 58% believe they are real people whose images are coming across to me in my near-sleep brain like television static.
my hometown of del mar is the first place listed in “surfin’ USA.”
these are del mar’s claims to fame:
first location listed in “Surfin’ USA”
The Torrey pine
Tony Hawk
Lingua Ignota
Skate park
Race track
relatable Wikipedia content from Ms. Ignota: About her hometown, she said: "I think of [Del Mar] as a sort of hell in the way that I was so different than everyone else when I was growing up and couldn't situate myself, couldn't find myself there at all.”
I can tell that I have unresolved issues because a tiny dream of mine is being on the “notable alumni” list of my former high school, Torrey Pines High School.
(are you an alumni if you never graduated and only went there for a year and a half? I went to TPHS longer than any other high school)
need to make sure I mention that in an interview on a credible website… somebody should interview me for a credible website and include the question “What is the name of your first high school?”
When I was editing the short-lived “Dog” section of Scott’s Wikipedia page, I tried to cite a story by Joseph Grantham called “Jelly” but the Wiki editors said it was not a credible website. Killjoys!
The photo of Jelly was from when Gian got into a fight with the internet… this is Jelly as a literary agent.
SPEAKING OF MAMBO NO. 5
here is a video of scott, chris, and i doing our cooking show, “Dumb Cooking.”
SPEAKING OF COOKING SHOWS
remember emily gould’s show, “Cooking the Books”?
the internet was such a better place 13 years ago
so nostalgic for CTB and also that apartment, the only place I ever lived alone. For a while my Wikipedia said I could perfectly poach an egg
Enjoyed 'Dumb Cooking' mucho - thank you. Is Lou Bega Lil' Louie Vega? He is, I figure. OMG Red Bull Music Academy... that is 2 cool 4 old skool. Anyways, check out "all the girls" (calvin harris). One for your list, Juliet. You couldn't play it these days, thankfully. And then again you probably could, sadly. Mambo is fab, though, isn't it? Super fun post. S'mores please, when you're ready :)
